Being True To Yourself –
When The World Has Gone Seemly Mad
In a world that constantly tries to tell you who you are, being true to yourself is one of the most powerful things you can do. For trans people, this truth is not just a quiet whisper. It’s a declaration, a steady heartbeat beneath every step we take. We are not “becoming something else”, we are uncovering what was always there.
It is easy, especially now, to feel the weight of other people’s opinions pressing in. Politicians, media voices, internet strangers with no knowledge of your life or your soul, all trying to speak over you and for you. But none of them live in your body. None of them walk your path. And none of them have the authority to define your existence.
Being trans is not about convincing the world. It’s about aligning with yourself. It is a personal truth, not a public debate. You do not need outside validation to be real. You do not need permission to be whole. Who you are is not up for discussion and your happiness is not up for negotiation.
We all want to be seen, to be understood, to be loved. That’s human. But the most important recognition you will ever receive is from yourself. It starts there.
Self-acceptance is not a destination at the end of your journey. It is the ground you walk on every day. It is the breath you take when you stop trying to meet expectations that were never meant for you.
Right now, the world feels chaotic. Attacks on trans rights, misinformation, rising hostility, it’s exhausting. And it’s real. But so is your power. You always have a choice in how you respond. Not everything deserves your energy. Not every provocation deserves your pain. You do not have to engage with every piece of bad news. You do not have to carry every headline on your shoulders. You do not have to absorb every opinion that was never meant to support you. There is a difference between awareness and surrender. Being informed does not mean being consumed.
There are three things I believe that matter right now.
First, refuse to give in to negativity. The world will keep spinning. Let it. You are not here to prove your existence to people committed to misunderstanding you.
Second, never confirm what others project onto you. You are not broken. You are not a threat. You are not a trend. You are a human being with a truth that no law or ideology can erase. When someone tries to define you, do not let their words shape the way you live.
And third, take meaningful action. Not performative gestures or endless online arguments. I mean real action.
Things that nourish you. That lift others. That build connection, peace, and strength. And if you see injustice, do something about it. Even if you do not see yourself as an activist, you can support those who are. Sign every protest. Share the truth. Give what you can to organisations doing the work. Volunteer your time. Even the smallest act matters. Because in-action is not neutral, it empowers the systems and voices working against us. Looking away, staying silent, or giving in to fear only makes the road harder for everyone. Change depends on all of us, that includes the part you play.
Being trans is part of who you are, but it is not all you are. You are not a statistic. You are not a punchline. You are not someone else’s talking point. You are part of the vast human family, and every human being deserves respect, dignity, and safety. No government or institution has the right to take that away.
But here’s the truth: if we accept their definition of us, we have already obeyed it. And that’s not just political it’s a betrayal of your own soul. There’s a quieter revolution waiting. It’s not about rage. It’s not about endless conflict. It’s about reclaiming your sovereignty, that deep, calm knowing that you are, and to live your life without apology. That you have the right to find peace without seeking approval.
When you approach people with hate, even those who oppose you, you build a wall. Hate breeds more hate. But when you stand firm in your truth without losing your centre, you break cycles. That doesn’t mean being passive. It means being powerful in a different way.
You do not have to be angry to be strong. That you don’t have to shout to be real. You do not have to be loud to be heard. You do not have to argue to be right. Your calmness is a form of resistance. Your joy is a form of rebellion. Your peace is a form of protection.
So stop doomscrolling. It helps no one, least of all you. The more you stare at chaos, the more powerless you feel. But your life, your real, daily life, is where your power lives. Turn your gaze inward. Tend to what you can control. Feed what keeps you grounded. Connect with others who see you fully. Speak your truth not because you have to defend it, but because it deserves to exist in the light.
This world will do what it does. But you, you get to choose who you are. That is the greatest power of all. And no one can take it from you.
